I work on phylogeny, taxonomy, biology, immature stages and other evolutionary aspects of beetles (Coleoptera), particularly those feeding on plant tissue and thus threatening Canadian plant resources. The groups I currently focus are mainly weevils (Curculionoidea; particularly from the leaf litter) and jewel beetles (Buprestidae); previously I worked on Archostemata, Carabidae, Scarabaeoidea, Ptiliidae, Staphylinidae and Dascillidae. My geographical focus is mainly Pacific Asia, although I generally try to maintain a cosmopolitan approach.

Phytophagous Coleoptera from the Asia Pacific Region posing a risk to Canadian plant resources

Monographing the genus Agrilus (Coleoptera, Buprestidae) of the Northern Asia with particular consideration to potentially invasive species (with postdoc Eduard Jendek).

Evaluation of semichemical lures for the rapid detection of Tetropium and other forestry pests (with collaborators Bruce Gill and Jon Sweeney).

Genetic barcoding invasive plant-eating beetles for rapid pest identification (with collaborator Mehrdad Hajibabaei)
