Collections

One of the major problems facing humanity is the conservation of biological diversity of the Earth.

The study of species diversity and natural systems is the subject matter of taxonomy. Collections are a working tool of zoological taxonomy.

To date, approximately 1.5 million animal species have been described. The collections of the Zoological Institute include approximately 60 000 000 accounting items.

The history of the collections of the Zoological Institute and the Zoological Museum and their inventory in each of the 14 Laboratories are being currently studied.

Results of this investigation presented in an INTERNET publication (by A.F. Alimov, V.N. Tanasijchuk, S.D. Stepanjants) and will be included in the Monograph about the Treasures of the Academic Collections of the Russian Academy of Sciences of St. Petersburg. Publication of this Monograph will be dedicated to the 275th Anniversary of the Russian Academy of Sciences and 300th Anniversary of St.Petersburg (Project N 00-06-80424 of the Russian Foundation for the Basic Research).
