Ричард Лешен (Richard A.B. Leschen) давно стал известным колеоптерологом с широкими интересами. Он начал свое университетское образование в штате Миссури (1980 – 1984 гг., Southwest Missouri State University, Springfield, Missouri), а продолжил в штате Арканзас. После окончания Университета Арканзаса (University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, Arkansas, 1986-1988 гг.), где он специализировался по энтомологии, подготовил под руководством д-ра Robert T. Allen и защитил мастерскую диссертацию на тему «Отношения жуков и базидиальных грибов фауны Арканзаса» (Coleoptera/Basidiomycete Relationships: Arkansas Fauna). Свою докторскую диссертацию Ричард готовил под руководством д-ра James S. Ashe уже в штате Канзас (University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas). Ее темой стала «Систематика и ревизия родов жуков-скрытноедов» [Systematics and Generic Revision of Cryptophagidae (Coleoptera)].

Уже первые публикации Ричарда свидетельствовали о широте его интересов – первые три его статьи посвящены разным отрядам насекомых: полужесткокрылым, перепончатокрылым и жесткокрылым. В дальнейшем тематика его статей таксономически очерчены уже, хотя нередко они так или иначе затрагивают взаимоотношения насекомых с грибами или взаимоотношения между насекомыми различных отрядов. В своей работе он широко использует кладистическую методологию, хотя его отношение к этим методам достаточно критично. Ричард Лешен интересуется фауной жуков различных регионов Земного шара, но получив место в научном учреждении Новой Зеландии, его публикации чаще так или иначе посвящены фауне различных жесткокрылых этих островов. Кроме того, можно заметить, что в последние годы, кажется, намечается крен в его интересах от стафилиноидных к кукуйоидным. Уже в начале своей профессиональной деятельности в круг его интересов входили образ жизни и строение преимагинальных фаз, а также строение ротового аппарата как взрослых жуков, так и личинок.

Ричард довольно общителен и легко включается в различные проекты. Поэтому многие его работы подготовлены в соавторстве с специалистами по разным группам насекомых и другими биологами. Я много лет переписывался с Ричем, однако встретился с ним только в 2002 г. в Лондоне. Он проявил себя как человек, очень увлекающийся различными проблемами, при этом он полностью погружается в обсуждаемую проблематику, забывая о времени, месте и других обстоятельствах и посвящая многие часы тому, что его сильно затронуло. Помимо энтомологии, он имеет глубокие знания в различных областях биологии и науки в целом.
