You should taste something like lamprey (Latvia is the only country in Europe with permission for commercial use of river lamprey Lampetra fluviatilis) or beaver (Castor fiber). A good (large) meal will cost ~ 5.- LVL (~9.- EUR) and 0.5 l of beer costs only 0.6 LVL (~1 EUR). You will like this!

If there is sufficient interest, there is the possibility of a brief tour to the area surrounding Riga. Within 10 km of Riga there are forests and mires (boreal forests with Zilora ferruginea, Neatus picipes, Corticeus unicolor, Aromia moschata, Ergates faber, Strangalia attenuata, Danosoma conspersa, Carabus nitens, Agonum ericeti etc. (I can send the complete list of ~15000 Coleopteran species recorded in this area by request) as also beavers, corncrakes, elks ). Collecting will be allowed, but there will be insufficient transport for all the participants. In case of interest can order 2-3 taxis (these will cost no less than 20.- LVL (~38.- EUR) each, so only about 5 LVL / person).
FRIDAY, 9TH JULY
10:00-19:00 Trip to the Gaujas National Park (Central Latvia): cultural programme + collecting.
Approximate costs: 20.- LVL (~35.- EUR) / person; these costs are included into the Symposium fee.
Bus from the Hotel Valdemars (23, Kr. Valdemara iela).
Approximate programme and events:
10:00 11:30 trip Riga Sigulda (~60 km)
11:30 12:30 visiting Turaida Livonian castle (panorama over Gauja river valley forests) and surroundings
13:00 15:00 collecting in the Gauja river valley in Sigulda (incl. Osmoderma ereimta locality in Krimulda, Denticollis rubens locality in Paparzu grava etc.)
15:00 16:00 lunch in Sigulda (will find a non-expensive pub )
16:00 17:00 trip Sigulda Cesis (~25 km) and brief view to the Cesis castle ruins and the old city (the former capital of Livonia)
17:00 18:00 trip around Cesis (incl. ancient valley of Amata river at Zvartes cliff, an old Lucanus cervus locality in Ieriki etc.)
18:00 19:00 trip back to Riga

10:00-19:00 Trip to the Sliteres National Park (NW Latvia): collecting.
Approximate costs: 23.- LVL (~40.- EUR) / person; these costs are not included into the Symposium fee.

13:00 14:30 collecting in the old mixed forest (Gnorimus nobilis, Ceruchus chrysomelinus etc.)
14:30 15:00 trip to Mazirbe
15:00 16:00 collecting on the Baltic Sea shore, dunes etc.
16:00 17:30 trip to Kolka, eating, visiting Kolka cape and coastal pine forest (Ergates faber faber, Stenagostus rufus, Chalcophora mariana etc.)
17:30 20:00 trip back to Riga

SUNDAY, 11TH JULY
9:30 13:00 excursion to the Riga Zoo and the largest Osmoderma eremita population in the city of Riga.
Approximate costs: 4 LVL (~7 EUR / person; these costs are included into the Symposium fee).

9:30 12:00 excursion to the Riga Zoo Insectarium (the best insect exposition in Europe 2002-2003 according to data from the European Association of Zoological Gardens; also IUCN protected species of saproxylo-mycetophagous darkling beetles (Tenebrionidae)) from Seychelles.
12:00 12:40 brief excursion in the Zoos surroundings: Osmoderma eremita populations in the city of Riga.
12:40 13:00 trip back to the hotel
