Book Description
In this first comprehensive survey of the Aleocharinae fauna of Newfoundland and Labrador (NL), 172 species in 47 genera and 12 tribes are reported for the province. One new tribe, Boreocyphini Klimaszewski and Langor, was erected to accommodate Boreocypha Klimaszewski and Langor, gen. n. Thirty-two new species are described:
1) Acrotona pseudopygmaea Klimaszewski and Langor sp. n.; 2) Aleochara (Coprochara) shelleyae Klimaszewski and Langor sp. n.; 3) Aloconota neocambrica Klimaszewski and Langor sp. n.; 4) Atheta avalon Klimaszewski and Langor sp. n.; 5) Atheta borealis Klimaszewski and Langor sp. n.; 6) Atheta curvipennis Klimaszewski and Langor sp. n.; 7) Atheta lindrothi Klimaszewski and Langor, sp. n. 8) Atheta pecki Klimaszewski and Langor sp. n.; 9) Atheta pseudodistricta Klimaszewski and Langor sp. n.; 10) Atheta pseudosubtilis Klimaszewski and Langor sp. n.; 11) Atheta sculptisoma Klimaszewski and Langor sp. n.; 12) Atheta terranovae Klimaszewski and Langor sp. n.; 13) Boreocypha websteri Klimaszewski and Langor sp. n.; 14) Boreophilia ovalis Klimaszewski and Langor, sp. n. 15) Boreostiba websteri Klimaszewski and Langor sp. n.; 16) Dinaraea pacei Klimaszewski and Langor sp. n.; 17) Gnathusa alfacaribou Klimaszewski and Langor sp. n.; 18) Gnathusa minutissima Klimaszewski and Langor sp. n.; 19) Gymnusa lindrothi Klimaszewski and Langor sp. n.; 20) Hydrosmecta borealis Klimaszewski and Langor sp. n.; 21) Hydrosmecta newfoundlandica Klimaszewski and Langor sp. n.; 22) Liogluta gigantea Klimaszewski and Langor sp. n.; 23) Liogluta intermedia Klimaszewski and Langor sp. n.; 24) Meotica pseudowinkleri Klimaszewski and Langor sp. n.; 25) Philhygra jarmilae Klimaszewski and Langor sp. n.; 26) Philhygra larsoni Klimaszewski and Langor sp. n.; 27) Philhygra pohli Klimaszewski and Langor sp. n.; 28) Philhygra pseudopolaris Klimaszewski and Langor sp. n.; 29) Philhygra pseudoterminalis Klimaszewski and Langor sp. n.; 30) Philhygra sinuipennis Klimaszewski and Langor sp. n.; 31) Phloeopora canadensis Klimaszewski and Langor sp. n.; and 32) Trichiusa pseudopostica Klimaszewski and Langor sp. n.
In addition to the 32 newly described species, we report 103 new provincial records for NL, including six new Canadian records. The NL fauna includes 26 adventive species of palaearctic origin, 14 holarctic species, and four species of undetermined status (holarctic or adventive). Adventive species constitute 15% of the total known aleocharine fauna of the province. The following new synonymy is established (first name being valid): Atheta fanatica Casey = Atheta irrita Casey. All species accounts include a short diagnosis, collection data, distribution in Canada, a colour habitus image, and black and white images or drawings of genital structures of both sexes. Keys to tribes, genera and species (with the exception of Atheta s. l.) are provided.
