I.V. AGARKOVA1, A.M. LYAKH2. GIS of the coastal zone of the Crimea.

Developed GIS is intended for analysis of the landscapes of the coastal zone of the Crimea from stands of the theory of paradinamical landscape complexes - spatially adjacent regional or typological units, between which the exchange of matter and energy is implemented (F.N. Mil'kov, 1981). By the condition of originating of the exchange their contrast acts. The database storable by an informational system, consists from: (1) the landscape and theme maps of the Crimean coast; (2) the data sets of the complex description of the underwater and above-water parts of coastal zone; (3) the off-the-shelf outcomes. The sources of information are the published works and the data banks of Marine Hydrophysical institute and Institute of Biology of the Southern Seas. The data given by the institutes, were considered as correct. For the verification of the remaining information the guidelines ICES/IOC (1995) GETADE were used. The relational model of the DB was employed. The structure of the DB was designed pursuant to the guidelines of V.L. Vladimirov (1992). For picking out of the natural complexes the algorithms of pattern recognition were applied. The knowledge about the bases of the theory of paradinamic complexes were obtained from works of F.N. Mil'kova (1970,1981), A.V. Drozdova (1985), E.G. Kolomytsa (1987), G.V. Shvebsa (1988) etc.

I.P.KABANTSOV1 , E.M.VASILENKO2 , V.N.TYRLYSHKIN3, V.B. SHYRINYA2. The experience of creating the GIS for Oksky Zapovednik on the base of the electronic forest maps.

One of the objectives of the project, funded by Danish Government and supported by WWF RPO, is to create GIS as integrated tool of management system for sustainable resources use within biosphere polygon of Oksky Zapovednik. GIS based on the electronic forest maps and attributive forestry database (created by FIE "Voronezhlesproject"). The professional software WINGIS combined with Northwest FIE software WINPLP made possible to unite both cartographic and attributive data effectively. The system allows carrying out the full scope of work on maps creating and analyzing, is functional enough, has a handle interface and make it easy to enter new data. The system includes sufficient means for entering current data as well as their updating by the natural growth tables. The request subsystem allows creating any documents, ties together cartographic and attributive databases and makes possible getting cartographic representations of results. Output documents may be created in formats supported by common software. The system provides wide opportunities for adding botanical, zoological and other monitoring data and is compatible for development automatic working places for decision makers and managers responsible in forest and PA's management and local development planning.

S.M.KRASNOPEYEV,  S.V.TURCHANOV &  T.A.KRASNOPEYEVA. Database "Rare and endangeres species of animals and plants, vertebrates of Primorsky Krai".

CD-based database "Rare and endangeres species of animals and plants, vertebrates of Primorsky Krai" was created. An interesting peculiarity of these database is a possibility to form spatial queries. At present those specialists who are engaged in GIS give attention to that, manipulating by the geographically distributed objects, the geographical information systems by themselves are, from the viewpoint of architecture, either local or file-server variant. A development of the current client-server technologies hardly touched on the current GISs. At present, in the Pacific Institute of Geography, FEB of RAS, a start has been made on the research related to implementation of a technology of the GIS interactive service presentation in corporate (Intranet) and global (Internet) networks. The re-processed to the Internet/Intranet variant database "Rare and needing in protection species of animals and plants of Primorsky Krai. Vertebrates of Primorsky Krai" can be an illustration of the similar system. Development environments are Delphi, ESRI MapObjectsInternet Map Server, Microsoft Internet Map Server, Microsoft Internet Explorer v. 4.0 and higher. Its down-sized version is available in the http:item.pacific.ru server. The essence of a development is an integration of Web- and GIS-technologies. This technology allows to realize the following scenario: a user starts the program-browser, for example, MS Internet Explorer, seeks a page with interactive map and forgets that he (she) is a client of Internet, i.e. begins to work with a map in the mode of desk GIS. Construction of distributed information systems within the frameworks of local, corporate, global networks allows to form the spatially unlimited network of clients the total number of which can be only limited by the power of computer (computers) in which the server of applications functions.

S.M.KRASNOPEYEV1, V.A.ROZENBERG2, T.A. KRASNOPEYEVA1. GIS- Technologies for Forest Analysis and Management in Primorsky Krai.

The collective of the researchers from Pacific Institute of Geography, Institute of Biology & Soil Science of the Far Eastern Branch of Russian Academy of Sciences (FEB RAS) and Primorsky Regional Forest Service has created the computer Geodatabase "State Timber Fund of Primorsky Krai". DB includes the following blocks: a) descriptive information for each forest survey portion the number of which exceeds 440 thousand; b) cartographic information (digital maps at the scale of 1:10 000, 1:25 000, 1:50 000) containing the limits of forest areas, divisions and survey portions. In a number of projects, we have attempted to demonstrate a spectrum of problems the practical solution of which has been made possible by appearance of similar DBs of primary forest management materials. The most valuable is the possibility to initiate a practical solving of the problems of the rational forest use and wildlife management planning; calculation and evaluation of different scenarios of the economic activity development. So, we are performing a pilot project one of the aims of which is to work out a technology of the economic analysis of variants of industrial exploitation of timber resources. The methodology worked out is oriented to obtaining the quantitatively substantiated evaluations within large territories which can be realistically used by the planning bodies at the Krai and region levels. RFFR has supported a publication of Atlas "Forests of Primorsky Krai" the special part of which consists of maps of 1:500 000 scale presenting the formation-typological and species composition of forests, their distribution by taxation signs, productivity and their protective-ecological functions. -

O. M. MASLOVSKY, P.A. RODIONOV & E.N. YAROCHEVICH. Use of the Geographical-Informational System "Flora" in botanical investigations.

The Geographical-Informational System "Flora" was created in IEB of Belarus National Academy of Sciences, which get possibilities for informational structuring about different botanical objects (mainly, threatened and using plants), for mapping of its distribution and also for making of different analytic operations. Main structure of the system includes 4 great blocks: place, mapping, population and species. Each block has one or some data bases and separate programs of selection and analysis of information. Original mapping block unites scanned maps of different scales (country, region and topographic - 1:100 000 and sometimes most detailed schemes). The scanned maps are as a background base and connects with electronic layers. Areas and objects of the layers connects with different data bases fields. Separate point is concrete community. Reflection of information about concrete plant population realizes on 3 map levels and separate screen, which includes: color photo and characteristic of this species, photo or scheme of habitat; description of concrete population (on 70 parameters). Practical fact base for creation of this system was a detailed field descriptions, mapping and estimation of 6 000 plant populations in Belarus and also a analysis of herbarium, literature and taxation materials about 80 000 populations of 250 plant species. Collected, systematized and inputted concrete material and computer programs not have analogs in Belarus.

V.A. ROZENBERG1, S.M. KRASNOPEYEV2, V.V. BOGATOV1. The Role of Geodatabases in Biodiversity Assessment in Primorsky Krai.

The inventory of the forest vegetation diversity fixed by forestry management has been for the first time carried out. As a result, we managed to reveal unprotected and poorly protected native groups of forest types being of the most important for conservation of biodiversity of the forest vegetation. "Strategy of the Sikhote-Alin biodiversity conservation" has been developed approved by the Resolution of Governor of Primorsky Krai No. 511 of 15.10.1998 as pre-planned document regulating kinds and regimes of wildlife management and recommended to all bodies of state administration, local authorities and economic subjects as a guidance document for planning of using and using of biological resources. When developing "Strategy...", in addition to Geodatabase "State Forest (Timber) Fund", a Database "Rare and needing in protection species of animals and plants, vertebrates of Primorsky Krai" was also used. The work has been performed with the participation of the Institute of Water and Ecological Problems FEB RAS, Hornocker Wildlife Institute (USA), and with financial support of USAID.

L.K.TRUBINA1, K.P.KOUTZENOGII 2, A.P.GUK 1 AND N.V.VLASOVA 3. GIS-technologies in complex estimation of landscapes.

Complex investigations of landscapes and biocenoses, and the formation of their adequate mathematical models are impossible without spatial information on the studied territory and the elements of its objects. Main sources of this information are materials of satellite, aircraft, surface macro- and microshooting. The technology for obtaining spatial data is proposed. It is based on digital photogrammetric treatment and GIS. The use of digital photogrammetric technologies provides both the automatic collection of spatial data on images to within necessary accuracy and details for each scale level and the visualization of information as three-dimensional models. Examples are given for realizing this technology.

B. BULCAEN, E. Van Den BERGHE. Plans for a biogeographic database for the North Sea.

A biogeographic database will be developed for the Southern North Sea, modelled on experience gained with the 'Marine Species Database for Eastern Africa (MASDEA)'. The main purpose will be to include all the species that were reported from the Belgian Continental Flat (BCF). Information included will be the literature references of the original species description and additional descriptions, plus information on the localities from which the species were reported (e. g. coordinates, description of the habitats, …). The aim of this project will be realised in two phases. First, a species list will be generated, including references of the original description. The number and location of the holotype and its type locality will be listed. Names placed in synonymy will be included if relevant to the biogeography of our area. As a second step, the records for each species mentioned in the literature, in peer reviewed articles as well as unpublished theses, will be incorporated. This will allow the generation of distribution maps for the species concerned. Literature information will be integrated with the library database maintained at the VLIZ. While developing this database, attention will be paid to avoid overlap with other initiatives, e.g. ERMS.
