Laboratory of Theriology — Department of taxonomy and phylogeny

Department of taxonomy and phylogeny unites specialists on small mammals: rodents, insectivores, and chiropterans. Prof. I.M. Gromov, and outstanding investigator of modern and fossil rodents, had created a scientific school of specialists on the taxonomy of small mammals; representatives of this school now actively work in many cities of Russia and CIS. А.А. Gureev had studied taxonomy of lagomorphs and insectivores and elaborated an original system of these orders. Other priority direction of studies is devoted to problems of speciation in small mammals. M.N. Meyer (1927-2001) had elaborated a complex approach in this field. Complicated taxonomic analysis of weakly diverging forms is conducted on the basis of the data of comparative karyology, molecular genetics, hybridization, and morphometry. P.P. Strelkov (1931–2012) was the most prominent specialist in taxonomy and ecology of chiropterans. His works became well-known in Russia and abroad.
