Laboratory of Insect Taxonomy — Department of karyotaxonomy

Department Website (In Russian)

Department of karyotaxonomy unites specialists on classical and molecular cytogenetics, karyotaxonomy, and molecular phylogenetics of several insect orders; dragonflies, mantophasmatoideans, homopterans, hemipterans, lepidopterans, hymenopterans, neuropterans, dipterans, and some others. L.A. Chubareva, a graduate of the Chair of genetics of Leningrad State University (at present, St. Petersburg State University), was a pioneer in development of karyotaxonomic studies; she was a student and follower of the outstanding Russian geneticist M.E. Lobashev. Her works in the field of comparative cytogenetics of chironomids and bloodsucking blackflies had founded the basis of karyotaxonomy as a field of taxonomic studies not only in Russia, but also in the world, and her students now work in Novosibirsk and Saratov, Armenia and Tajikistan, Slovakia and Bulgaria. Another priority direction of studies of the department is associated with the use of methods of molecular genetics (DNA barcoding, phylogenomic analysis, whole genome sequencing) for the study of biological diversity and problems of evolution and speciation with the example of separate groups of insects.
